Appalachian Fall

I started getting to know the subjects of this series through a mutual friend several years ago who was doing a yearly wild blueberry harvest in Maine where many folks who want to make their own alternative path in life earn some of their yearly income. In November of 2015 I had the chance to road trip with my wife and three boys to where many of these friends congregate and spend a large part of the year: Appalachia. It's a good fit for those who are skeptical of what our American culture and economy have to offer. People have been making their own way in the mountains for generations, and are still doing so today. My time was mainly divided between Berea, KY and Marshall, NC. My desire was to make images that give a glimpse into the personalities, lives, and environments of those I spent time with there.
